Today we discuss about the Literacy rate of Himachal Pradesh.
To know developments in the society, literacy is the proper indicator of economic development. For purpose of census, a person in age limit of seven and above, who can both read and write with understanding in any language is considered as a literate in India.
The Himachal Pradesh State Education Department was set up after April 1948. The standard of literacy rate at the time of independence in Himachal Pradesh as well as when it came into existence, was very low, only about 7 percent (mentioned below in the table). The literacy rate in the state started increasing gradually when successive government introduced various education programmes to promote education.
Literacy rate of Himachal Pradesh has seen an upward trend and is 83.78 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy rate stands at 90.83 percent while female literacy rate is at 76.60 percent. In 1951, the literacy rate of Himachal Pradesh was 7.98 percent only.
